So this was the date I went back for a follow up apt with Dr. Roth. I went in for an ultrasound first. The ultrasound showed that my cervix funneled to the cerclage. Whereas after surgery it was closed. And it showed that from the stitch to the outside it was closed to 1.5cm.
Dr. Roth said this is common to see the funneling to the stitch. He said he expected to see this at this stage. And that if it had been closed vs funneled then the cerclage was performing beyond what they had expected. So he told me not to worry too much. But that the rest of the pregnancy was to be a waiting game.
Eric could not attend this visit because he had to be in class for an exam. But during this visit we had to decide what we would do if I went in to labor. He wanted a birthing plan laid out. He said it was important to have these things on paper so that I dont go in unprepared.
So the following was to be put in to place if I went in to labor at these dates and times. Note that 23 weeks and 6 days is still considered 23 weeks no matter what.
23 weeks - There was a 30% chance for survival I think ( cant remember but it is low). And even if he were to survive, he could have major problems such as blindness, deaf, retardation and many other concerns. So we said I would just deliver vaginal birth and let it be what it is.
24 weeks - This is what he calls the bronze metal. He feels at this stage the baby is considered viable with medical intervention. And the success rate starts to climb of course, but still bad chance of having problems. He suggested maybe a C-section at this time. He said that early deliveries can be hard on babies, so why make it more difficult. And then it was decided that at 24 weeks we would start Betamethazone steroids to mature his lungs in case he were to come early. A lot of times the problem comes because they cant breathe well. So this would help to eleviate that problem.
24 weeks - 32 weeks we were going to concentrate on getting the baby his steroid injections every 2 weeks, and concentrate on what type of delivery. At 28 weeks we are at a silver medal so he says. The success rate goes up to like 90% or something like that. And at this stage he is confident that they can do all they can do to get as good as an outcome as possible. Later at other apts it was decided that I will now deliver vaginal birth unless an emergency arises.
36 Weeks- he is going to cut my stitch and then let nature take its course.
He told me that he wants me to be calling him at 40 weeks bitching that I want him to take this kid out of me. He literally said that. He totally cracks me up.
He decided to keep me on this anti-contraction medicine. He said the benefits have been wonderful. And he does this for a living. So I trust him. And so far so good. I just have to remember to drink my water.
And there is a FFN test. They would swab my cervix. And if there is this fluid present, it will report that as positive that there would be a 15% chance that I will go in to labor in the next 2 weeks. And if it is negative that means that I have almost no chance of going in to labor in the next 1-2 weeks. So the plan was that every time I go in for a cervical measurement that they will perform this test. If it is positive, it doesnt really give me the answer I want. But if it is negative, it sure can help me relax. So that was exciting that they can do this. CRAZY.
I did not like thinking about the baby not making it, or having problems. I remember leaving this apt feeling odd but reassured. I felt that I would be okay. But when you think about the possibilities, it sometimes shakes you. And this was the first time Eric couldnt be there. And he keeps me together.
Of course he called me right after I got out. I relayed the info to him. And of course he was optimistic. But it was good. And I knew I just have to keep staying in bed and not mess around. It was after all for a good cause.

October 2, 2009
The long awaited apt with Dr. Roth (High Risk OB) was in the morning. So my Aunt Jamie took me in. Eric had to go to an 8am class. My apt was for 9am. Then my mom met us there after her apt.
When Jamie and I got there, they said I was not preregistered so I had to go downstairs. We were at the Sparrow Professional building, which across from Sparrow Hospital. So I walked downstairs got registered then back up to wait.........
Finally I was able to go in and get my ultrasound. Everything looked great on him. She said he looked perfect. She said that he measured almost a week ahead. She said he will be taller than norm is all. Which then of course we laughed because I think I am short and Eric is convinced I think he is a midget. I asked her if they were going to stitch my cervix today? And she said no are we suppose to? I said YES!!! And I explained to her my predicament. And she said well we will have to measure that and see what the Dr. says. She said what will probably happen is if you need a cerclage, he will schedule you for Wednesday when he does surgeries. And I was like, but I dont have until Wednesday. And she said well let me measure and have him look at it. She said he is the best person to do this. So if it is really urgent he will let you know. So then she got a look through the pelvic ultra sound. And yup I was at .4cm. Which meant I hardly had any cervix left. And basically I was on the verge of labor.
So Dr. Roth comes in and the first thing he says to me is...."well how about some surgery for lunch?" I was like sounds good to me. He explained that what would eventually happen is I would efface completely (thin cervix) and then begin to dilate, and then lose the baby at that point. So we had to get in there ASAP to stitch it up. He said he was upset that they did not indicate at Alliance how thin my cervix had become when they made my apt on Tuesday. And said that he would have done that surgery that day. Now we barely had anything left to work with. So we talked about our risks. We talked about our chances. He pretty much said that he is a pro at this. And that he was super confident that we would be okay. He said its not the stitch that matters so much. Its how to keep labor at bay. That 2 weeks after the surgery are critical. That bacteria, infection, dehydration, all of those could cause premature labor. And no stitch can stop that. So he said I would be in the hospital for 3-7 days. It all depends on how my body responds to surgery. And then he left me and Eric to get ready to go.
He brought me a wheel chair and said your days of walking are done. I was like WHAT? So needless to say it was a little overwhelming. They wheeled me directly to the hospital through the overhead tunnel. And I got right in to my private room Room308 at OB Special Care Unit. So it was me, Eric, mom and Jamie. They got my IV put in. They checked on the baby. And then of course we waited. While we waited, Eric and I were like who cares if people know his name....lets just say it. I wanted to talk about him like he was real. So there was a dry erase board on the wall. So then of course Eric felt the need to play a sort of hangman game with them until they figured it out. It took them quite a few guesses for the first name. Odd ones like Lohan, Ennis YEAH RIGHT! haha And Jamie guessed Chase right away. So then it was like from that moment on, we are just coming out with it.
I was looking up baby names not to long before this on babycenter.com. and there were all these categories you could check out....Soap Opera names, Movie star names, and Super hero names etc.... Well Eric and I are totally in to that crap. So I looked at the SuperHero names. Honestly I did not expect to find anything. I was just curious. And I ran across Logan. I loved it immediately. The deal was Eric would come up with the girl name (if I have not said that before). And I would come up with the boy name. So I emailed Eric to see what he would think. And he rights back...something like "awesome, Wolverine". haha Which of course is the name for the character Wolverine from the X-Men series. And then of course I ran across the name Chase, I think from the actor Chase Crawford. His name was everywhere, and I thought it just sounded nice. And can you believe it, Eric loved it. So that was it....Logan Chase Starn.
So they came in to get me. And honest to God, I was not nervous until then. Dr. Roth sounded so confident that this bandaid so to speak was all I needed to worry about. But leaving Eric I got a little freaked out. They wouldnt let him come with me to get ready. So I started to panic a little. They got me back there and I was prepped to get my spinal block. OMG...I was such a big old chicken. The one lady wrapped me up with blankets and hugged me while they did it. haha And believe it or not, it did not hurt. My IV hurt worst than that.
So quickly you literally have no feeling below your boobs basically. And of course they put you in a very awkward position, that leaves you exposed to about 6 surgeons. AWESOME. We joked a lot. The anestesiologist was the same one I had when I got my gall bladder out. She is so cool. And I found out she is friends with my sister Libby. Small world huh? Anyway, I told Dr. Roth to make a quilt down there, and make sure it is nice and closed. He then joked back that he was going to stitch his initials in my cervix. I said do what you have to do as long as it is closed. Everyone laughed. I tried not to look because they had all these massive tools and were stabbing at me. But I never felt it, so I just ignored it and talked about soaps with the anesthesiologist guy that was there. haha Then at one point he said "Oh, your about to pass out". My blood pressure had dropped so low. So then he quickly turned up something and I was fine. It was odd for a minute. But everything was fine. So then the Dr. comes to me and says well, you just had to be trouble for me didnt you? I said what does that mean, and I swatted his arm. He said well you have a long vagina. I was like WTH. There is nothing long on this body....but that? haha So he said it made it hard to get to my cervix good. He then said I do an excellent job, and with you I did an OK job. Which means you have to be on bed rest until you have the baby. I was so devestated. I said what do you think my chances are. He said if you behave yourself, they are good. We will monitor you weekly or bi-weekly and go from there. Until then, just get yourself some rest and try not to worry.
So they wheel me in to the recovery area. There was another woman next to me that had just had a baby. I believe they were hispanic, they spoke what I thought was spanish. And her sister and her sisters children were running around like animals in there. I wanted to smoosh their heads. OMG...the nurse had to yell at them and then removed them.
So then I had to wait 3 hours for the block to wear off before they would let me head back to my room. While it was wearing off, the only pain I felt was my stomach had small period like cramps. It worried me, but she told me it was normal. And she told me to expect some bleeding. That freaked me out. But she said it was normal. However, lucky me...I did not bleed once.
During my stay, I had some visitors.....my parents, Erics family, aunts, cousins, grandma, and friends. So that was very nice. Then of course flu season was about to hit its all time high. And they decided that as of Monday, we were not allowed visitors. Only spouses and grandparents were allowed to visit. However, that didnt matter. I went in for my follow up ultrasound and it showed I now had a 3.3cm cervix. So at that point everything looked great. So then of course the docs came in to talk to me. They said they would release me. They then had full hopes of me actually going long enough for him to make it. And this of course made me so happy. Eric had been in class when they came to see me. But he quickly found out the good news when he came back to take me home. He had stayed with me every night in the hospital. Which I appreciate . He was able to unhook all my wires and tubes for me to use the restroom all night long He was such a good husband. I just love him.
So with prescriptions in hand home we went. Well it was quickly decided that home was going to be at my parents house. Their room is next to the bathroom on the first floor. Whereas at our house the bedroom is upstairs. And the Dr. specifically told me no stairs. I was so scared to go home. I felt very comfortable knowing that at the hospital that if something happened, they were there to help me fix it. So going home made me nervous.
So here we are..... We wait........

Its a Boy!
So all of you know by now that we are having a boy. In fact you all probably know more than you wanted. But I felt the need to go back to my blog and document what I have gone through that past 7 weeks. My baby might want to know the story of how he came to be one day. And he might get an idea of why it is we will be so attached to him and never want to let him go. So I am going to reach far in to my damaged pregnesia ridden brain and try to recall all of the past moments. This might be a multiple segment deal. So hang in there if you are even still reading....
September 29, 2009
That morning I had a work meeting. I was just about to learn the basics of the dreaded Scheduling. And I was so excited because I knew I was about to find out what we were having. Eric and I knew we wanted to know. We didnt care to wait. So off I went to Alliance for my big ultrasound. At this stage in the game I was 19 weeks pregnant. We went in, and Eric and I both looked at each other and said its a boy?!? We did this sort of "isnt it ?" look to each other. Well she did her thing with the wand over my belly. And of course there he was, our little kicker. He was moving as much as he always does, so she couldnt really get a good look between his legs. I said to her "please tell me what it is, we are having a party to tell our family and friends what we are having tonight so I need to know". And she said well my best guess would be a boy. But I cant be sure. So then I asked her to do a vaginal ultra sound. As with being high risk, I had gotten those all along, and honestly they are more accurate. So she said, she would try. So the minute she did it, she said YUP, Its a BOY! We were excited. We were both leaning towards girl. But not becasue we wanted a girl more, simply because we loved the name that Eric had chosen for a girl. He has some good taste let me tell you. We were going to name her Alexa Joelle. How pretty is that? Well if someday we ever have a girl....that will be her name.
So then after my ultrasound it is standard that I meet with the Dr. So I got dressed and we waited for the Dr. While we waited we talked about how excited we were. And we talked about going to Babies R Us to register while we waited for the party we had planned that night. And then she came in and said the baby looks great. "However, you cervix is starting to shorten". We need to put a stitch in your cervix to hold your pregnancy. She said that they do that to patients that have a 2.4CM or shorter cervix and that mine was 1.4CM. Eric and I knew it. We have never ever been to an apt and left feeling good. So why would that day be any different. She then said I needed to be on bed rest the entire pregnancy. I started to fight it. As I couldnt imagine. I was only barely half way through the whole pregnancy. And I had so much to do at work. It just didnt seem possible. But quickly I remembered that I didnt go through all this heartache and back and forth to let work help me lose another baby. So I agreed and told her I would figure it out. In the mean time, she thought Dr. Roth should be the one to do the cerclage. She said he is a pro at it. And she didnt want to risk it, knowing all I had been through. I didnt lose it until I went in to the lobby area to check out. I had to go to the bathroom to gather myself. Dr. Kelley felt bad. She came to check up on me. But I just couldnt talk to her. I waited for the secretary to make me an apt with Dr. Roth to get my cerclage done. They came up with October 2nd for me to come in for an ultrasound. Apparently they have to run their own test to see where it is and what to work with. And I questioned, that if it was such a big deal, why did I have to wait until Friday? The only answer they gave me was that he was a busy man, and we had to go with his schedule not theirs.
So Eric drove me home, to which I cried the entire way. I thought about the party that we had planned that evening. And I thought about how was I suppose to cancel this thing. Eric being super supportive and awesome, took care of everything. And he eventually got me to calm down. So we made our way to my parents house. We told my dad and my sister as they were home. And they made me lay down immediately. Everyone made pone calls for me to cancel the evening. And of course people called to check on me and what not. I was just kind of in shock I think. I knew well in advance about cerclages. And I had done research well before my 2nd trimester. I had suggested they put a stitch in me all along. However they told me my cervix was fine. And I kept telling them that it wasnt. That I knew I would need one. But when they would measure me, it was fine. But I knew it was why I lost babies. I just had no proof.
Well it was decided by my parents that Eric and I would basically move in until we had the baby. Our bathroom is upstairs, and theirs is right next to the bedroom. So it just made more sense. And with Eric having to continue to work and go to school full time, I needed someone to watch me. And since my dad is home, it just worked out well.
The next three days were hell!!!! Mostly emotionally. I felt like a ticking time bomb and I still do to this day. I just thought omg if I move wrong it could come open and I lose him. Which is exactly what the doc had told me. She had said that if my body chose to go in to labor that it would just happen and I would lose it. That did not settle well with me. So I was on edge.
What is insane looking back on all of this is, if I didnt insist on having the pelvic ultrasound, I would have just lost him. So remind me to thank him for being as stubborn as his mother for keeping his legs closed.
